NAGWS Alters Scoring Format to Rally Scoring
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO - The National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS), the official rules maker for NCAA and NAIA women's volleyball, passed several proposals at its Feb. 9-11 meetings in Reston, Va., including the change in scoring format.
The NAGWS passed legislation at its meeting to utilize a best three-out-of-five rally scoring format to 30 points in games one through four and rally scoring to 15 in the deciding fifth game. All games must still be won by two points.
Currently, all levels of women's collegiate volleyball use the traditional side-out scoring to 15 points with rally scoring in the tie-breaking fifth game. NCAA men's volleyball implemented the all rally scoring format for its current 2001 season.
Other significant rule changes passed at the NAGWS meetings include allowing the let serve, one toss per serve in eight seconds with no re-serve, serving is not allowed between games, both team's lineups are due at the end of the final timed warm-up period on the court and if a multi-colored ball is used, at least one-third of it must be white or light in color. Also, all volleyballs used in a match must have the same specifications. The NAGWS also passed a measure requiring the band on the top of the net to be between two and 3.125 inches wide.
The NAGWS passed the international pursuit rule as an experimental rule. A ball that has passed completely beyond the center line outside the antenna may be retrieved if it is returned to that team's playing area outside of the antenna.
These rule changes summarize the highlights from the NAGWS meetings. A full listing of rules changes will be made available at a later date.
