 Brittany Williams

Assistant Coach, South Carolina State University

AVCA: Who or what has made you want to pursue coaching?

Brittany Williams: I would have to say that I have always wanted to be a coach. From the first time that I started playing organized sports I was always that player who wanted to help the people around me get better. I also enjoyed sharing what I learned with those around me. I have several people in my family who are coaches and it is something that I have always been around growing up. I've always enjoyed it and I think I've always known that this is what I wanted to do and I was happy doing it.

AVCA: Who or what has been your biggest coaching influence?

BW: The person who has had the biggest influence on my wanting to coach would be my Aunt Rose Brimmer. She has been a coach for as long as I can remember and she is great at what she does. Growing up I was able to see all the lives she has touched of players that she has come in contact with. I also saw her go from coaching locally at a high school for the first part of her career to becoming an assistant head coach at one of the top institutions n the country. She would have to be the person who has had the biggest influence on my wanting to become a coach.

AVCA: Please list your past and present coaching/playing experiences:

BW: I played Division I volleyball at Howard University where I was the starting setter and played outside hitter during my 4 years there. During my collegiate playing years I also worked as a club coach in the Maryland and DC area. After completing my last year of eligibility I served as the student assistant coach for one (1) year at Howard University. Upon graduating from Howard I became the assistant coach at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where I served for one season. I also served as the volunteer assistant at Connally High School in Austin, Texas for one year as well as coached club in the area for three years. After leaving Connally I took the head coaching position at Westside High School in Houston, Texas were I was the head coach for the past three years until my current position as the assistant coach at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

AVCA: What are you most looking forward to at the 2010 AVCA Annual Convention?

BW: I am looking forward to being able to meet and share ideas with other people in the coaching profession. I think that it will be a great opportunity for me and will allow me to make connections with other people who share a common interest in coaching volleyball. I also feel that there is a wealth of knowledge for me to acquire while attending from people that have been in the field for many years.
