Dawn Jones -- Convention Experience
Assistant Coach, Butler University
Q: What were your expectations before attedning the convention and were they met? If so, how? If not, how?
Dawn: Before attending the convention, I thought that I would learn some great new ideas and meet some new people. My expectations were met x10! I learned so much more than I could have imagined, met a whole lot of great people that I hope to stay connceted, and had a great time during the whole entire week!
Q: Did your coaching philosophy change after attending the convention or did it remain the same? (If you didn't have one before, do you have one now?)
Dawn: Some of my philosophy probably did change, but I think it is more of my style of coaching that would actually change. The way to interact with athletes on all levels and how to get them to be as productive as they can be. Observing great coaches that I admire in the same sessions that I attended, reminded me about continual education on volleyball.
Q: What was your most memorable moment at the Convention? Or, please explain any "aha!" moments you may have experienced.
Dawn: It is very hard to pick a most memorable moment because there were so many great ones. One was coaching the kids at the clinic and learning that for some of them, this was their first time touching a volleyball and with instruction. Another moment would probably have been sitting in the Division I coaches general meeting and realizing that there is so much more to coaching than just our team. The ripple effect of many different areas in volleyball, both positive and negative, rely heavily on how coaches make their decisions. Volleyball is ever evolving and the factors are so multi-dimentional. Sitting in this meeting reminded me that coaches do more than just the on-court coaching!
