Division III members have enrollments ranging from a few hundred to tens of thousands. Participants at the NJCAA Division III level are some of the purest amateur athletes there are. They compete for the love of the game and their teammates and the passion they have for their sport with no promise of monetary reward or assistance.

In 1996, the NJCAA began offering a separate national championship for Division III Volleyball.
