Victoria Brown

Volunteer Assistant Coach, University of Toledo

AVCA: Who or what has made you want to pursue coaching?

Victoria Brown: Last year I was a club coach and in September I played professionally in Spain. During one of my games in Spain I was sitting out and realized I was more looking for things going on the court strategically as a coach instead of a player. That was when I realized it was my last year as a player and I would be starting my collegiate coaching career soon. Confirmation of my feeling came when I became a volunteer assistant coach. I realized my passion had switched from player to coach.

AVCA: What or what has been your biggest coaching influence?

VB: My biggest coaching influence is Don Hardin and Kevin Hambly of University of Illinois. Don and Kevin were great examples of a coach in practice, during the games, and in the community. Kevin influenced me on teaching a skill and how to look at the game as a whole. Don showed me that a coaches' responsibilities are not just to the players and hwo to win games, but also the community of your school.

AVCA: Please list your past and present coaching/player experience:

  • 2004-2008: Middle Blocker at the University of Illinois
  • 2008: Professional Volleyball Player (Klagenfurt, Austria)/2009 Puerto Rico Juncos Valencia
  • 2009: Professional Volleyball Player (Haro, Spain)
  • 2010: Toldeo Volleyball Club Coach
  • 2010-11: Professional Volleyball Player (Palma de Mallorca, Spain Oxidoc Palma)
  • 2011-present: Volunteer Assistant Coach, University of Toledo

AVCA: What are you most looking forward to at the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention?

VB: I am looking forward to the seminars. Hearing Mike Hebert and Shelton Collier on 'Getting Your Team Good and Staying Good,' is very exciting for a new coach. Also, meeting more people that have the same love for the sport as I do. Possibly being able to meet coaches that have truly influenced the game at the collegiate and national level.
