Agenda
I. Committee Guidelines

Jeanne reviewed the committee guidelines that are posted on the AVCA Web site. One guideline states that should a member miss two calls within one term, that member shall be immediately removed from the committee and replaced. It was suggested that this guideline is a bit harsh and that the rule only be applied if the absences were unexcused. Coaches who are unable to make the conference call should contact Jeanne prior to the meeting and it would be considered an excused absence. Also, coaches who are unable to attend the calls can have an assistant coach or another staff person sit in on the meeting for them. The goal of these calls is to get the information out to the conferences and having another person attend for a coach will still accomplish this goal.

In addition, the committee discussed the three-year terms and the value of making appointments on a yearly basis.

II. DIII Announcements for Conferences

Committee members were asked to communicate with all conference coaches to make sure their AVCA membership is current and that their member profile is updated with current contact information. In addition, schedules and season previews should be submitted to the AVCA office as soon as possible.

III. DIII Poll

The committee discussed the value of having a preseason poll or whether to wait a few weeks into the season before conducting the first poll. During the February 7, 2005 meeting the committee decided to have a preseason poll and then wait until the second week of September before conducting the first regular season poll. The committee decided to keep that policy for this season.

IV. DIII Legislation

Bill Rogers brought up the issue of the 50-mile radius that coaches must adhere to when coaching club teams. Recent DII legislation expanded this radius from 50 to 100 miles for DII coaches. Bill would like to see similar legislation put in place for DIII coaches, as he is concerned that the 50-mile radius may limit some club coaches from becoming DIII coaches. Bill spoke with TJ Meagher about this issue and was told that DIII coaches must go through the legislative process in order to get changes passed and could not piggyback on the DII coach's legislation.

Kathy DeBoer noted that legislation must come from the conferences or several schools joining together and could not be submitted by an association like the AVCA. She suggested finding out if other coaches agreed with Bill to expand the radius and if so, to see if a conference could be found to submit this legislation.

Bill will write up his proposal and it will be considered during the September call.

V. AVCA Leadership

Kathy DeBoer introduced the AVCA staff attending the meeting and then gave an update on the move to HOST Communications. She noted that all things associated with the move had exceeded expectations to this point and she is very excited with the direction the AVCA is going.

Convention registration will be available in the next 2 or 3 weeks. Coaches should watch their mail and e-mail for details. Tickets for the championship are sold out this year but coaches will be able to get them through the AVCA by registering for the convention. All DIII coaches should be sure to register early for the convention in order to get a ticket for the championships.

Jeanne noted that membership in the AVCA for DIII coaches is currently about 70 - 80% of all head coaches. The goal of the AVCA is to reach 80 - 90 % of all head coaches belonging to the association. Kathy told the committee that a personal appeal from coaches to other coaches who are not AVCA members is the best form of advertising for membership. Deb Zellers mentioned her conference passed legislation to make sure all coaches are members of the AVCA and suggested that other conferences could possibly do the same.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:05 p.m. ET. The next call is scheduled for Monday, September 11 at 11 a.m. ET.
