Ania Ruiz, a 5-11 senior outside hitter for eighth-ranked University of Tampa (29-3, 13-1 SSC), has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division II National Player of the Week after pacing the Spartans to a 3-0 record for the week and a share of the league title. Ruiz averaged 6.11 kills, 0.78 blocks, 3.56 digs and 0.78 aces per game. She hit .381 for the week with 55 kills on 105 attempts and recorded two double-doubles. Ruiz turned in 24 kills, 16 digs and two block solos in a victory over Sunshine State Conference rival Barry, which was ranked fourth in the nation. She added 23 kills, a .514 hitting percentage and 11 digs to conclude the week against Lynn. Ruiz chipped in eight kills and five digs in a three-game win over Nova Southeastern. She increased her season averages to 4.36 kills, 0.63 blocks and 2.74 digs per game. Tampa is the number-two seed in the NCAA Division II South Regional Tournament and will play the winner of the North Florida and Wingate match. The University of Tampa head coach is Chris Catanach.
