Santa Barbara Outlasts No. 13 Hawai'i, 3-1
Santa Barbara, Calif. - The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team and UC Santa Barbara battled through four deuce game with the Gauchos prevailing, 32-30, 30-32, 36-34, 36-34, Saturday night, at Robertson Gym.
The Gauchos swept the two-match series with their five-game victory on Friday. The Warriors dropped to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
Freshman Joshua Walker led the Warriors with 26 kills on .370 hitting. Jacob Schkud added 15 points, six rebounds, and six blocks while Jim Clar had 13 kills and five blocks.
The first game, which was a sign of things to come, featured 19 ties and four lead changes. The Gauchos held off two UH game points for a 32-30 victory.
In the second game, the Warriors rallied from a six-point deficit and trailed late 20-14 for a 32-30 win.
In game three, the Gauchos trailed throughout and rallied for the victory. UH led 14-7 and 25-22 but UCSB stormed back to tie it at 25. UH held game point twice at 30-29 and 33-32 before the Gauchos ended it with kills by Phil Matthews and Jeff Menzel to take a 2-1 lead.
In game four, UH again led early taking a 15-7 lead at the halfway point. The Warriors led by as many as 20-11 and held three game points at 29-26 before the Gauchos tied it at 29 and eventually took a 30-29 lead. Hawai'i held off five game points before UCSB finally put the match away when Matthew pounded his 19th kill.
Theo Brunner led UCSB (4-6, 3-4 MPSF) with 25 kills. Jeff Menzel added 23 kills, 10 digs, and five blocks.
The Warriors return to the Stan Sheriff Center to host the annual alumni match, Friday, Feb. 8. The alumni vs. alumni match begins at 4:00 p.m. followed by the featured UH vs. alumni match at 7:00 p.m.
