No. 14 Loyola-Chicago Defeats Mercyhurst, 3-0
Erie, Pa. - The 14th-ranked Loyola men's volleyball team hit .416 as a team as the Ramblers swept MIVA foe Mercyhurst, 3-0 (30-21, 30-25, 30-27) in Erie, Pa., on Friday night. With the win, the Ramblers improve to 5-2 (3-0 MIVA) while the Lakers fall to 0-8 (0-2 MIVA) on the season.
Senior opposite hitter Ian Anderson and junior middle blocker Nick Lamoureux led Loyola in the victory. Anderson poured in a match-high 19 kills and a pair of aces while hitting .516 and Lamoureux chipped in 11 kills, two digs and a couple of blocks as he hit .556 over three games.
The Ramblers jumped ahead early in game one and never relinquished the lead. LU went on to take the first game, 30-21. The tables turned in game two as Mercyhurst led for much of the second game. Redshirt freshman setter Mike Hutz jump-started the Ramblers' comeback as his service ace put Loyola up 19-18. The Ramblers went on an 8-2 run as they took a five-point lead (25-20) en route to a 30-25 victory.
Up 2-0 after the intermission, Mercyhurst continued to battle with Loyola for much of game three. The Lakers pulled within two (29-27) on a kill from Tim Wagner, but it would not be enough as Anderson smacked his final kill of the evening to end the game and match.
Hutz notched 44 assists, three digs, two blocks and a pair of service aces for Loyola.
The Ramblers are back at it Saturday, February 2 when they go head-to-head with No. 8 Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. First serve is slated for 6 p.m.
