No. 8 Buckeyes Complete Two-Match Sweep of Quincy
Columbus, Ohio - The eighth-ranked Ohio State (4-1 overall, 3-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team completed a two-match sweep of Quincy (4-5, 0-5) with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-17) victory over the Hawks Saturday night in the Pepsi Arena.
Buckeye Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 13.5 points with 11 kills, two ace serves and an assist block. Quincy's Peter Coley collected a team-high 11 points with nine kills, a solo block and two assist blocks.
Tied at two in game one, two Hawk errors put Ohio State up 4-2. At 6-4, a Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio) kill and a Hawk error took the lead to 8-4. Leading by four at 15-11, a John Klanac (So.-Fr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) kill and a Quincy error took the Buckeye lead to 17-11. After a Hawk kill by Shawn Brannick made it 17-12, a Klanac kill, a Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) kill and a Hawk error made the lead, 20-12. Leading 27-19, a Klanac kill, Spurlock-Klanac block set game point at 29-19. Ohio State won the game, 30-19, with a Brett Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) ace serve. The Buckeyes hit .478 for the game to .048 for Quincy.
Quincy opened game two with kills from Robbie Coughlin and Coley and a Coley-Kyle Volstad block to hold a 3-0 lead. With Quincy leading 15-12, a Hawk error, a Klanac service ace and a Klein kill tied the game at 15. The game remained close with each team taking two point leads. Tied at 26, a Buckeye service error and a Coley block gave the Hawks a 28-26 lead. The Buckeyes responded with a Versen kill and an ace serve from Mathews to tie the game at 28. A Klein-Heine block set game point at 29-28 for Ohio State. A Klein kill closed out the game at 30-28 and gave the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .179 in the game to .273 for Quincy.
Ohio State broke a two-all tie with kills from Klein and Versen for a 4-2 lead. At 9-7, a Klein kill and a Hawk error took the OSU lead to 11-7. Leading 13-9, kills from Klein and Klanac and a Klein ace serve made it 16-9. Ohio State continued to expand the lead. At 27-17, two Hawk errors set match point at 29-17. The Buckeyes, with a Spurlock-Versen block, won the game, 30-17, to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .571 for the game to Quincy's .042.
Ohio State hit .361 for the match to .141 for Quincy. The Buckeyes had a 42-30 margin in kills and a nine to two edge in ace serves. OSU's Mathews recorded a match-high four ace serves against the Hawks. Each squad had 20 service errors. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 25-21 margin in digs with Buckeye Conor Martin (Sr., Avon Lake, Ohio) recording a match-high six. At the net, each team recorded four team blocks. OSU's Spurlock and Quincy's Coley each recorded a match-high three blocks. Spurlock had three assist blocks and Coley had a solo and two assist blocks. At setter, Mathews collected a match-high 33 assists while Quincy's Ivan Shirokov had 24.
Ohio State returns home next weekend to host Lewis Friday and No. 14 Loyola-Chicago Saturday in 7 p.m. matches in St. John Arena.
