No. 6 Stanford Sweeps UC Santa Barbara
Santa Barbara, Calif. - No. 6 Stanford came out strong and never looked back in their second sweep of the season, coming against MPSF rival UC Santa Barbara (30-28, 30-26, 30-26). The Cardinal hit an incredible .414 as a team in their most dominating victory of the season. Redshirt junior Jesse Meredith recorded 13 kills and hit .522 and senior Matt Ceran recorded 17 kills and hit .517 for the match.
Junior Jarod Keller led the Cardinal with 12 digs, with Ceran and sophomore Evan Romero recording eight and seven respectively. In the first game Stanford fell behind and towards the end of the match 23-20. The Cardinal roared back though, and tied the match at 27, and eventually was able to win 30-28 in a strong comeback effort. Romero led the Cardinal in the first game with six kills and sophomore Kawika Shoji tallied 15 of his 51 assists in the first game.
The second match also needed a comeback effort as the Cardinal found themselves down 20-15, with the Gauchos in control to tie up the match. Stanford scored five of the next six points to get within one, and grabbed the lead at 24-23 en route to a 30-26 win. Ceran led the team with seven kills in the frame, and gave the Cardinal a commanding 2-0 match lead.
There was less suspense in the third game, as the Cardinal was able to capture the lead at 17-16, and never trailed in the rest of the game. Meredith recorded five kills in the game, and Ceran recorded five of his own. Sophomore Garrett Werner had a strong game of his own in Santa Barbara, hitting .500 for the match after recording five kills.
The Cardinal as a team played a very strong overall game, as they hit .421 in game one, .326 in game two, and a season-high .514 in the third game.
Stanford will return home next weekend to face off against the Pacific Tigers, in a match that will take place on Thursday, Jan. 31. The match will take place at Burnham Pavilion, and will start at 7:00 p.m.
