No. 9 Ohio State Sweeps St. Francis
Columbus, Ohio - The ninth-ranked Ohio State (2-1 overall, 1-0 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team, behind a match-high 17.5 points from Robbie Klein (Sr.-Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio), defeated St. Francis (1-3), 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-16) Sunday night in front of 203 fans in St. John Arena. Klein produced a match-high 17 kills while hitting .500 and added an assist block. Jordan Varee had a team-high 11.5 points for St. Francis with 10 kills and an assist block.
Ohio State opened game one with kills from Klein and Kevin Heine (So.-Fr., St. Louis, Mo.) and a Red Flash error for a 3-0 lead. At 10-7, kills from Brent Versen (5th-Sr., Centerville, Ohio) and Klein and a Daniel Mathews (Sr., Shorewood, Wis.) ace serve gave Ohio State a 13-7 lead. The Buckeyes would hold the lead and reach game point at 29-18 with a Ben Spurlock (Sr.-So., Stow, Ohio) kill. A St. Francis kill by Varee stopped the game point at 29-19. A Klein kill closed out the game at 30-19, Ohio State. The Buckeyes hit .513 for the game to .231 for St. Francis.
Two kills from Klein and a Red Flash error gave Ohio State a 3-0 lead to open game two. At 4-1, two OSU errors and a Pete Freyer-Varee block tied the game at four. At six-all, a Freyer kill gave St. Francis a 7-6 lead. Four straight errors by the Red Flash gave Ohio State a 10-7 lead. With St. Francis trailing, 15-12, two OSU errors and a Varee ace serve tied the game at 15. A Red Flash error, a Versen kill and ace serve built an 18-15 lead for the Buckeyes. Ohio State held the lead, reaching game point off a St. Francis error at 29-23. Two Ohio State errors made it 29-25 before a Klein kill ended the game at 30-25, Ohio State, for a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes hit .379 for the game to .095 for St. Francis.
Back-to-back kills from Klein gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead to start game three. Leading, 6-4, three St. Francis errors and a Klein kill gave the Buckeyes a 10-4 lead. The Buckeyes held the lead reaching game point with a John Klanac (So.-Fr., Orchard Park, N.Y.) kill at 29-14. Two Buckeye errors cut the lead to 29-16. A Red Flash error ended the game with a 30-16 Buckeye win and a 3-0 victory in the match. Ohio State hit .538 for the game to .065 for St. Francis.
Ohio State hit .479 for the match to .128 for St. Francis. The Buckeyes had a 56-25 advantage in kills and edged the Red Flash in ace serves, four to three. Versen recorded a match-high two ace serves in the match. Ohio State gave up 21 service errors to 12 for St. Francis. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 31-23 advantage in digs in the match. Ohio State's Conor Martin (Sr.-Sr., Avon Lake, Ohio) collected a match-high seven digs in the contest. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 4-2 edge in team blocks. OSU's Heine recorded a match-high three assist blocks against St. Francis. Mathews recorded a match-high 39 assists for the Buckeyes while Shane Conley had 22 for the Red Flash.
Ohio State returns to play in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association with back-to-back road matches against Quincy next Friday and Saturday.
