No. 10 Eastern Mennonite Splits Pair of Matches in Saturday DIII Action
Mount Olive, N.C. - The Eastern Mennonite University men's volleyball team was at the Mount Olive College Tri-Match where the Royals suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Mount Olive but rebounded to beat King College 3-1 in the second match of the day.
In the first game, senior outside Ethan Fry (Guatemala City, Guatemala) had a team high 13 kills along with seven digs while senior setter Ben Yoder (Lederach, Pa./Christopher Dock) had 34 assists. Game scores for the Mount Olive match were: 30-32, 22-30, and 29-31.
"Mount Olive played well and their passing did not allow us to set up for many block attempts throughout the match," explained EMU head coach Steve Benson. "We were just up and down throughout the game and Mount Olive was ready to play."
Against King College, EMU lost the first game to the Tornado's but came back and won the next three games to take the match 3-1. Game scores were: 27-30, 30-25, 30-28, and 30-26.
Freshman middle Frankie Coto (Miami, Fla./Southwest Miami) led the team with 15 kills, four block assists, and two service aces while senior right-side Calen Hochstetler (Orange Co., Calif./Palomar C.C.) had 14 kills and 15 digs.
"The team really stepped up against King College, especially in the second game," added Benson. "They were still a little beaten up from the match against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez and it took some time to get back into a rythem."
The Royals will see more of the Tornado's as King College heads to Harrisonburg, Va., on Wednesday, January 23, for a 7 p.m. match with EMU.
