No. 4 Carthage Defeats Rivier and Vassar in DIII Matches

Milwaukee, Wisc. - The Carthage College men's volleyball team (1-0, 0-0 Midwest-III Volleyball Conference), ranked fourth in the Jan. 15 American Volleyball Coaches Association/College Sports Television NCAA Division III poll, won a pair of matches on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Jan. 19-20 Carthage/Milwaukee School of Engineering "Wisconsin Classic."

Saturday's matches were played at MSOE's Kern Center in Milwaukee, Wis., with Sunday's action switching to the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, Carthage defeated No. 11 Rivier College (1-1), 3-0, before downing Vassar College (1-1) by a 3-1 margin.

Carthage's winning game scores over Rivier were 30-23, 30-25 and 30-26, and its winning game scores over Vassar were 30-23, 25-30, 30-21 and 30-18.

Carthage's Juri Veldre had a team-high 16 kills and hit .444 in the Rivier match" while Chris Allen had eight kills and hit .636.

Allan Russo had 16 kills against Vassar and hit. 371, while Veldre had 15 kills and hit. 294. Tim Walker collected 14 kills and hit .500.

On Sunday, Jan. 20, the Red Men play host to Fontbonne University (0-4) at 10 a.m. and No. 3 the University of California-Santa Cruz at 2 p.m.
