November 7, 2006
Chair: Brenda Williams, Olivet Nazarene
Absent on the call: Susan Clements (Region 11), Israel Negron (ex)
Committee Chair: Brenda Williams
1. The NAIA HCC officially welcomed Todd Lowery to the committee; Todd is the new representative from Region 3, taking over for Dave Moody, who had to leave the committee due to conflicts with class times.
Dennis Janzen was special guest on the call. Janzen told the committee that statistical consistency and education is something that is needed very badly within NAIA volleyball. He also stated that coaches should be proactive rather than reactive in trying to rectify the problem. He also expressed that he and others are ready to see how the new tournament format works this year.
Brenda thanked Dennis for taking time out to speak to the committee, and told him to use the AVCA HCC as he needs to.
An update on the membership drive within each region:
Region 1 - up to around 70%
Region 2 - coaches are part-time/not understanding benefits
Region 3 - around 100%
Region 8 - 11/14, with four going to Convention
The topic of incentives began as a result of this discussion, and what reasons current members should give prospective members on reasons to join. The educational journals and the Convention were seen as two of the major incentives to draw in new members. The question was also raised as to whether the NAIA could mandate membership, but the thought was that it would not work. The idea of a first-time discount was also mentioned; get them in the door (especially to the Convention), and show them the benefits are worth the membership. It was also suggested that it might be easier to add a current member's assistant than to try and convince a head coach of first-time membership.
Looks like we may have 10 of our committee members attending the convention.
NAIA meetings at the Convention: Wednesday, Dec. 13 NAIA-VCA officers only meeting from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Hilton; Thursday, Dec. 14 AVCA/NAIA from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. in the Qwest Center; Friday, Dec. 15, NAIA/VCA General Meeting from 8:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at the Hilton; AVCA Annual Meeting from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. in the Hilton; AVCA NAIA Head Coaches Committee Meeting 11:45 a.m-12:45 p.m. at the Hilton.
Will Engle reported that the statistics survey is out to coaches, but initial results are not available yet, but should be by next call, and definitely by the Convention.
Conference Direct Model
Brenda talked with Lori Thomas at the NAIA - Direct Qualification was supported by the Council of Presidents beginning in 2008, there is a committee working on the final set up (they are looking at all sports), they will discuss the latest with us at our business meeting. We might want to come up with a possible model to be proactive in working with the committee. Mike Gibson will try to be our contact concerning this.
It was a consensus that the statistics are still not close to being as accurate as they should be. Brenda did a study at her in-season region tournament and saw that many stats are still all across the board; she compared and sent out educational e-mails to all the teams that were there, and sent them the NAIA stat info and the NCAAA stat website. Chris Duenow suggested that the home team should keep stats for everyone; that way, the stats will be consistent, and there's room for both coaches to determine if there's a problem because they're both invested.
It was noted by the committee that stats could be hurting players when it is time to determine All-Region and All-America teams.
A suggestion was also made that Academic All-America should be based on players who play, not just someone on a roster.
There was discussion about gaining consistency for seeding of post season tournaments. It was strongly recommended that conferences/regions use the criteria set forth in the manual of the NAIA. Mike Gibson is heading up an effort to compile suggestions on seeding processes. The committee was encouraged to e-mail Mike with ideas for seeding post season tournaments.
1. Josh Crosier, men's representative, was asked to have a full report for December, as the men's season draws nearer. The committee encouraged Josh to let them know how they can help men's NAIA volleyball.
2. Will Engle noted that Nov. 27 is the deadline to get the AVCA staff any materials that will need to be printed for the meeting at Convention.
Membership Drive - continue to recruit coaches in your region.
Remind coaches to renew their membership and register for the 2006 AVCA Annual Convention.
