No. 2 Pepperdine Defeat Pacific 3-1
Stockton, Calif. - Reigning national player of the year Jonathan Winder directed a balanced attack and led the #2 Pepperdine men's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory at Pacific on Friday evening (30-26, 30-19, 31-33, 30-22).
The Waves improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, while the Tigers dropped to 0-6, 0-4. It was Pepperdine's ninth consecutive win over Pacific.
Playing without junior opposite and All-American first teamer Paul Carroll, the Waves got 17 kills apiece from junior outside hitter J.D. Schleppenbach (Ventura, Calif./Ventura HS) and freshman outside hitter Cory Riecks (Auburn, Calif./Placer HS), as well as a career-high 16 kills from junior outside hitter Matt McKee (Aurora, Ill./Aurora West HS).
Winder (Irvine, Calif./Woodbridge HS), a senior setter, had 54 assists (he now needs just 35 more to become Pepperdine's all-time leader) and helped Pepperdine to a .363 team hitting percentage. He added a career-high 17 digs.
Carroll (Forster, Australia) injured a wrist this week at practice and was unavailable.
"With Paul we're pretty good and without him we're a different team," Dunphy said. "Five of our seven guys are playing for us basically for the first time ever, so we'll take it. We weren't as smooth as we wanted to be. In game three I think we made eight serving errors. Otherwise we probably would have won it in three."
Pacific hit just .229 as a team. The Waves managed 15.5 blocks, led by nine block assists from junior middle blocker Mark Hulse (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township HS/Rutgers-Newark) and eight from McKee.
The Waves next visit #6 Stanford on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 7 p.m.
