Quincy Drops Match to No. 14 Loyola-Chicago
Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University men's volleyball team dropped to 0-2 in conference play with a 3-0 loss to Loyola University of Chicago at home on Friday night. The Hawks started strong holding a lead in game one but fell 30-25, 30-19 and 30-18.
Quincy opened the match with five straight points with kills from Shawn Brannick, Ed Ryan, Robbie Coughlin and a service ace from Christopher Zeidler. But the Ramblers pulled together, tying the game at 10-10 after a Hawks attack error and later took their first lead at 13-12 on a kill by Joe Guntli. The Ramblers rolled off six straight points to pull away from the Hawks and take a 17-12 lead.
Quincy battled back to tie the game at 20-20 after a Rambler attack error but were unable to take advantage as Loyola pulled away for the 30-25 win.
The Hawks held a 5-3 lead in game two before Loyola scored five straight points. The game was tied at 10-10 but once again the Hawks were unable to put together a strong of strong sets allowing Loyola to edge away. Game three saw the Ramblers hit a match-high .526 as a team with 12 kills and just two attack errors.
Loyola hit .440 as a team for the entire match while Quincy hit just .197. Shawn Brannick led the Hawks with seven kills while Ivan Shirokov finished with 17 assists.
Quincy falls to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association. They return to action with a pair of road matches tomorrow as they take on St. Ambrose University and Clarke University.
