No. 6 NYU Defeats New Paltz in DIII Home Opener
New York, N.Y. - The New York University men's volleyball team combined to hit .402 including .692 in the fourth and final game to defeat SUNY New Paltz 3-1 in the team's 2008 home opener, Friday, January 18, at the Coles Sports Center in Manhattan.
The Violets (5-1) took the first two games with ease 30-25, 30-23 but then stumbled in game three, allowing the Hawks (1-4) to take the game 30-26. NYU regained its composure in the fourth game, putting down 19 kills against only one error to secure its fifth victory of the season, continuing its best start since the inception of the rally-scoring era in 2001.
Leading the way on offense for the Violets was senior Willy McFarland who recorded a career-high 16 kills while hitting .429 while also contributing four digs, two blocks and a service ace.
Also in double digits for NYU was junior David Coll who recorded 13 kills while hitting .500. He also added a career-best seven digs along with a block and a service ace.
Senior tri-captain Jon Wintermeyer provided a huge spark off the bench, putting down nine kills in two games while hitting .818.
Junior setter Ilan Goldstein ran the offense to perfection, putting up 55 assists while also adding two kills and four digs.
The Violets return to action Tuesday, January 22, when they play host to Rutgers University-Newark in both team's first EIVA Hay match of the season. The match will also mark the first meeting between the teams since Karl France left the Violet during the off-season to take over the head coaching position with the Scarlet Raiders. First serve is set for 7:00
