No. 4 UCLA Sweeps UC San Diego for Third Straight League Victory
Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA men's volleyball team won its fourth straight match Thursday, sweeping UC San Diego for its fifth win of the season.
The Bruins won 30-21, 30-28, 30-26 in 80 minutes in front of 356 fans in Pauley Pavilion. The victory raised UCLA's overall record to 5-1, 3-0 in league play. UCSD fell to 1-3, 0-3.
The Bruins enjoyed success in all three offensive phases of the match Thursday, out-blocking the Tritons 11-7, out-serving them 6-5 and out-spiking them 46-39. UCLA hit .381 and limited UCSD to a percentage of .178.
Sophomore Garrett Muagututia torched the Tritons for 14 kills (.450), adding two aces and one solo block for 17 points. Junior Sean O'Malley smacked 10 kills (.350) and scored 11 points. Senior Tony Ker led the Bruins with eight digs and setter Matt Wade scored six points with 36 assists.
UCSD's Jason Spangler led all players with 16 kills, and Russ Hardy added 10 (.438).
UCLA hosts undefeated Long Beach State on Fri., Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion.
