No. 9 Nazareth Outlasts Mercyhurst in Five Games
Erie, Pa. - Seventh-ranked Nazareth defeated host Mercyhurst in a grueling five-game match by the score of 30-28, 30-23, 38-40, 32-34, 15-9. Senior Adam DiCicco clinched the Golden Flyers' victory in the fifth game with a kill after junior setter Frank Leahy advanced the ball to him.
With the victory, Nazareth improves to 2-1 overall while Mercyhurst falls to 0-3. The match started about 90 minutes late after Nazareth's bus broke down on the way to Erie.
Leahy guided Nazareth's attacks and finished with a school-record 69 assists, which is one more than his previous school record. Senior Tom Maving recorded a team-high 20 kills while junior Joe Petzoldt added 19 kills, and senior Kellen Gambeski contributed 14 kills. Junior Kelvin Rolle also had 12 kills for the Golden Flyers.
In the fifth and deciding game, Leahy recorded nine of his assists and Petzoldt had four kills to propel the Golden Flyers.
Defensively, Maving and Leahy each recorded 11 digs while junior Chris DeHority added eight. Nazareth recorded a team hitting percentage of .600 while keeping the Lakers' hitting percentage to .286 in the fifth and deciding game.
Dave Newman recorded a match-high 24 kills for Mercyhurst, who also received double-digit kills from Jonathan Gurr (16), Tim Wagner (12), and Joe Montroy (10). David Hatten recorded a team-high 49 assists for the Lakers while Pete Swauger added 19.
Nazareth hosts Niagara College Wednesday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition match.
