Hunter College is Preseason Pick in NECVA CUNYAC Division

Jersey City, N.J. - Hunter College, which went undefeated in the CUNYAC Division in 2007 before falling in the division championship match, has been voted as the preseason favorite to win the 2008 NECVA CUNYAC Division title, in a preseason vote by the division's eight head coaches.

The Hawks went 25-12 overall last season and 14-0 in the division. Hunter received five of seven first place votes cast after reaching the NECVA and ECAC South tournaments a year ago. Hunter tallied 54 of a possible 56 points in the poll.

Baruch College, the two-time defending CUNYAC Division champions received the other two first place votes. The Bearcats, which also reached the NECVA and ECAC tournaments last year after a 3-1 win over Hunter in the division finals, went 18-17 overall and 12-2 in the league. Baruch will be guided by interim head coach Allison Gunther. Baruch earned 51 total points in the poll.

While the coaches were clear about whom the top two teams in the league will be, the CUNYAC division's dark horse pick is up for grabs. Brooklyn College, City College of New York, City Tech, Lehman College and York College all received one vote.

Brooklyn College was voted third in the poll with 36 points, after a berth in the NECVA and ECAC tournaments in 2007. The Bridges placed third in the CUNYAC last year, finishing 15-10 and 10-4 in the division.

City College of New York was voted fourth, and was just one point behind Brooklyn with 35. CCNY was 11-16 last year and 9-5 in the league and will be guided by new coach Jason Dibelius. Lehman was picked fifth overall with 25 points. The Lightning were 4-19 and 3-11 in 2007.

York was selected to finish sixth, while City Tech and Medgar Evers College rounded out the poll in seventh and eighth places, respectively. City Tech will be directed by former CUNYAC Player of the Year Eder Mathelier, who makes his coaching debut.

Schools received eight points for a first place vote, seven for second place, six for third, etc., with one point for an eighth place selection.
