Chris Schmidt, a 6-3 senior middle blocker for third-ranked New York University (4-4, 0-3 EIVA Tait), has been selected the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III Men's National Player of the WeekSM. Schmidt led the Violets to a 2-1 record for the week as he averaged 4.23 points, 3.64 kills, 1.00 blocks and 0.64 digs per game with a .554 attack percentage. He hit .500 with 15 kills, four blocks and four digs in a win over Vassar on Jan. 31. Schmidt hit a season-best .800 with 12 kills on 15 errorless swings in a sweep of NCAA Division I Sacred Heart on Feb. 2. He added three block assists in the victory over the Pioneers. Schmidt concluded the week with 13 kills on a .462 attack percentage, four blocks and three digs in a four-game loss to NCAA Division I St. Francis (Pa.) on Feb. 3. He averages 3.38 points, 2.75 kills, 1.08 blocks and 0.67 digs per game this season. Schmidt has recorded three or more blocks in a match five times this season. A Violet has now won the national honor 12 times, the last being Jon Wintermeyer on Jan. 23, 2006. The NYU head coach is Jose Pina.
