No. 6 New York University Tops Mercyhurst in Season Opener
Erie, Pa. - Junior tri-captain Devin Zolnowski recorded a career high in kills and led the team in three categories as the New York University men's volleyball team opened its 2008 season by defeating NCAA Division II Mercyhurst College 3-1 on Friday, January 11, in Erie, Pennsylvania.
In a very tight contest, the Violets, ranked #6 in the preseason CSTV/AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Division III Men's Top 15 Coaches Poll, held off the Lakers 31-29, 28-30, 30-27, 30-28.
Zolnowski began the 2008 season in strong fashion, recording a career-high 24 kills while hitting .378. He recorded 12 of the team's 21 kills in the fourth and decisive game while also hitting an astounding .733. Zolnowski also recorded team highs in both digs (7) and blocks (4).
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Francis Hodgson did not disappoint. The 6-6 middle blocker recorded 10 kills on 13 attempts for a team-best .769 attack percentage while also recording three digs and three blocks.
Also beginning the year in strong fashion were senior tri-captain Jonathan Wintermeyer and sophomore Eric Chakeen. Wintermeyer recorded 12 kills along with four assisted blocks, while Chakeen recorded a career-best 14 kills and added a team-best two service aces.
Sophomore setter Braden Fujikawa was the cornerstone of the NYU offense, recording 44 assists in three games with a .473 assist percentage.
The Violets return to action this weekend as the team travels up the coast of Lake Erie to Buffalo, NY, to take part in the 2008 Nickel City Classic. The squad will face #8 D'Youville College at 8:00 pm on Saturday, January 12, then will face #13 Medaille College at 11:00 am, as well as NCAA Division II Mt. Olive College at 2:30 pm on Sunday, January 13.
