No. 11 Hawai'i Grounds Ball State In Four

Honolulu, Hawai'i - Junior outside hitter James Clar posted a match-high 23 kills in leading the 11th ranked University of Hawai`i to a 26-30, 30-26, 30-24, 30-17 victory over Ball State tonight on second day action at the 14th Outrigger Hotels Invitational in front of 2,799 (issued) at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Cardinals (0-2) took the opening set by a score of 30-26. There were 11 ties and three lead changes in the set. Clar got untracked early posting six kills. Overall, it wasn't a pretty hitting set as neither team hit above the .200 mark.
The Warriors (1-1) turned the table in Game 2, 30-26. Clar added another seven kills, while UH was very large up front boasting 8.0 team blocks.

UH found some energy in Game 3 and picked up where they left off in the previous set at the net adding another six team blocks. The momentum carried over the Game 4 as UH won going away, 30-17.

Keali`i Frank led all blockers with 11 stuffs at the net, one shy of the tournament record. Newcomer Dusan Matic sported seven blocks while both Clar and Sean Carney contributed six apiece. Carney had a solid night setting tacking on 50 assists. Jacob Schkud was the only other Warrior with double-digit kilss (12).

Ball State was led by the trio of Matt Sprague (12 kills), Matt McCarthy (11) and Ryan Clarke (10). Setters Jeff Schmitz and Ethan Pheister handed out 27 and 22 assists, respectively.

Tomorrow night, Penn State battles Ball State at 4:00 p.m., while UCLA faces host Hawai`i at 7:00 p.m. A seven-player all-tournament team will be announced following the last match on Saturday.
