Duncan Budinger, a 6-8 senior middle blocker for top-ranked Long Beach State University (5-0, 1-0 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Budinger helped the 49ers to a 2-0 record last week with sweeps of UC San Diego and California Baptist. He averaged 3.33 kills, 2.33 blocks, 0.33 digs, 0.17 aces and 0.33 assists per game while hitting .643 on 28 attacks. Budinger hit .812 versus UC San Diego with 13 kills on 18 swings, in addition to seven block assists, two digs, one ace and two assists in the victory. He paced the 49ers against CBU, the top-ranked NAIA team, with seven kills and seven blocks while hitting .417. Budinger, who now has 306-career blocks, averages 2.61 kills, 1.61 blocks, 0.50 digs and 0.17 aces per game this season. A Long Beach State student-athlete has earned the national honor 11 times with the previous honoree being Tyler Hildebrand (April 4, 2005). The Long Beach State head coach is Alan Knipe.
