Ivan Perez, a 6-4 sophomore outside hitter for second-ranked Brigham Young University (6-0, 4-0 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Perez led the Cougars to two victories over eighth-ranked UC Santa Barbara by averaging 6.50 points, 6.00 kills, 1.00 blocks and 1.29 digs per game. He hit .516 combined in the two matches on 64 swings. Perez tallied a season-high 23 kills, four blocks and six digs while hitting .472 in the first match on Jan. 20. He was credited with a season-high .571 hitting percentage in the rematch against the Gauchos with 19 kills, three digs and three blocks. Perez added 46 reception attempts without an error in the two victories. He averages 5.32 points, 4.82 kills, 0.91 blocks and 1.59 digs per game this season while hitting .362. A BYU student-athlete has earned the national honor 14 times, the last being Rob Neilson on March 21, 2005. The BYU head coach is Tom Peterson.
