Dan Rhodes, a 6-5 junior right side/opposite hitter for fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge (8-5, 4-4 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the WeekSM. He led the Matadors to a sweep of 13th-ranked Southern California and a five-game loss to second-ranked Pepperdine. Rhodes averaged 8.56 points, 7.63 kills, 1.00 blocks, 1.75 digs and 0.38 aces per game while hitting .455 over eight games. He contributed 20 kills on a .567 attack percentage in a road match against Southern California, in addition to four blocks, three digs and two aces. Rhodes became the fifth NCAA Division I-II player to reach 40 or more kills in the rally-scoring-era with 41 against Pepperdine. He charted a .408 attack percentage, 11 digs, four blocks and an ace in the five-game loss. Rhodes placed 14 of his 41 kills on the stat sheet in game three to spark the Matador comeback forcing a fifth game. He increased his season averages to 5.11 points, 4.52 kills, 0.70 blocks, 1.86 digs and 0.18 aces per game while holding a .247 season attack percentage. A Matador student-athlete has won the national award six times, the last being Joe Nargi on Feb. 10, 2003. The Cal State Northridge head coach is Jeff Campbell.
