Lauri Hakala, a 6-2 junior outside hitter for second-ranked University of Hawai'i (23-4, 19-3 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the WeekSM. Hakala led the Warriors to consecutive wins over then-fourth-ranked BYU, which extended Hawaii's win streak to 19 matches. He averaged 5.06 points, 4.25 kills, 1.00 blocks and 0.88 digs while hitting .475 in eight games. Hakala recorded 13 kills, four digs, two blocks and an ace with a .632 attack percentage in a sweep of the Cougars on April 14. He contributed a .400 hitting percentage with 21 kills, six blocks, three digs and an ace in a five-game victory in the rematch on April 15. Hawai'i snapped a six-match losing streak to BYU in the process. Hakala averages 4.80 points, 3.96 kills, 1.03 blocks, 0.30 aces and 1.62 digs per game this season with a .373 attack percentage. The Warriors also earned the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation second seed in the MPSF Tournament. A Warrior has earned the national honor 15 times, the last recipient being Matt Bender on Feb. 27, 2005. The Hawai'i head coach is Mike Wilton.
