Paul Johnson, a 6-8 senior middle blocker for top-ranked UCLA (7-0, 3-0 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Johnson led the Bruins to victories over third-ranked Pepperdine and 13th-ranked Southern California. He averaged 4.42 kills, 0.85 blocks, 0.4 digs and 0.14 assists per game as UCLA remained undefeated on the season with two league victories. Johnson hit .500 with 13 kills, four blocks and two digs versus Pepperdine on Jan. 19. The Waves were undefeated heading into the match. Johnson contributed 18 kills with a .552 hitting percentage, eight blocks, one dig and one assist against Southern California on Jan. 21. He raised his season averages to 5.42 points and 4.42 kills per game. Johnson also won the national award on Feb. 9, 2004, and a Bruin has claimed the honor a total of 12 times. The UCLA head coach is Al Scates.
