Evan Patak, a 6-8 sophomore outside hitter for seventh-ranked UC Santa Barbara (5-4, 5-1 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Patak led the Gauchos to victories over ninth-ranked Stanford and 10th-ranked Pacific last week. He averaged 8.78 points, 7.89 kills, 1.22 digs, 0.67 blocks and 0.56 aces per game. Patak set an NCAA rally-scoring era record with 48 kills in a five-game victory over Stanford on Jan. 29. He added four aces, two block assists, eight digs, 53 total points and a .527 attack percentage in the match. Patak started the week with 23 kills, four block assists, three digs and an ace in four-game victory over Pacific on Jan. 28. He raised his season averages to 6.93 points, 6.10 kills, 0.47 blocks, 1.13 digs and 0.57 aces per game. Patak also won the national award on March 1, 2004, and a Gaucho has claimed the honor a total of six times. The UC Santa Barbara head coach is Ken Preston.
