Matt Bender, a 6-1 junior outside hitter for third-ranked University of Hawai'i (11-2, 9-1 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Bender helped the Warriors to a split last week against top-ranked UCLA by averaging 5.42 points, 4.57 kills, 1.29 blocks and 1.43 digs per game. He contributed an overall .466 attack percentage on 58 attacks in the two matches, which raised his season hitting percentage to .303. Bender tallied 19 points, 16 kills, seven digs and four blocks in a four-game loss to the Bruins on Feb. 25. He produced a .625 hitting percentage with 19 points, 16 kills, three digs and five blocks in a three-game victory on the following night. Hawai'i had never swept UCLA in Los Angeles until the Feb. 26 match. Bender improved his season averages to 4.19 points, 3.55 kills, 0.72 blocks and 1.36 digs per game. Hawai'i currently is second in the MPSF conference and plays Pepperdine this week marking four straight matches against league leaders. A Warrior student-athlete has earned the national honor 14 times. The Hawai'i head coach is Mike Wilton.
