Keith Kowal, a 6-7 senior middle blocker for fourth-ranked Penn State University (16-2, 5-0 EIVA Tait), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Kowal led the Nittany Lions to victories over UC San Diego and 12th-ranked UC Irvine last week at the Triton Invitational. He attacked at a robust .725 percentage for the weekend with 3.63 kills and 1.63 blocks per game. Kowal charted a .667 attack percentage versus UC San Diego with 12 kills on 18 errorless swings. He added eight block assists and a dig in the four-game victory. Kowal contributed a .773 hitting percentage versus UC Irvine with 17 kills on 22 attacks. He added five blocks and two digs in the four-game victory. For the weekend, Kowal tallied 29 kills on 40 attacks without an attack error. Kowal increased his season attack percentage to .488, along with upping his season averages to 2.56 kills and 1.51 blocks per game. A Nittany Lion student-athlete has earned the national honor nine times, including three by Kowal (previously honored on March 22, 2004 and Feb. 21, 2005). The Penn State head coach is Mark Pavlik.
