Daniel Mathews, a 6-6 freshman setter for 10th-ranked The Ohio State University (24-7, 14-2 MIVA), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Mathews helped the Buckeyes capture the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament title and berth into the NCAA National Collegiate Volleyball Championships with victories over 15th-ranked Ball State and IPFW last week. He averaged 12.00 assists, 1.33 blocks, 1.11 kills and 0.11 aces per game in two matches while Ohio State hit .290 as a team. Mathews collected 57 assists, seven blocks, four digs, three kills and an ace in a five-game victory over Ball State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals on April 29. The Buckeyes hit .277 in the victory. Mathews produced 51 assists, five blocks, a career-high seven kills and one dig in the championship match versus IPFW on April 30. He hit .600 individually on 10 attacks, while OSU hit .303 as a team in the four-game victory. Ohio State earned the fourth seed in this week's NCAA Tournament and will face top-seed Pepperdine on May 5. A Buckeye student-athlete has earned the national honor nine times.
