Fernando Pessoa, a 6-4 senior outside hitter for eighth-ranked Brigham Young University (1-3, 1-1 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Pessoa led the Cougars to a 1-1 record in two matches versus fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge. He recorded 11 kills, eight digs, four block assists and three assists in a Friday night upset sweep of the Matadors. Pessoa's 18 kills and 10 digs in a Saturday five-game loss set a career-high and marked his first double-double in kills and digs. In the first game, Pessoa recorded four kills in four attempts for a 1.000 percentage, then registered five kills and a .571 percentage in game two. He finished the match hitting .500 with four errors on 28 swings. Pessoa averaged 3.63 kills, 2.25 digs and 1.00 blocks and hit .429 on the week.
