Paul Johnson, a 6-8 junior middle blocker for top-ranked UCLA (10-1, 5-1 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Johnson led the Bruins to two wins on the week, including sweeps of fifth-ranked Cal State Northridge and Division III's fifth-ranked team UC Santa Cruz. He posted back-to-back outings hitting over .533 and tallying six blocks. Johnson tallied nine kills and one error in 15 attempts for a .533 hitting percentage against UCSC and followed that with 15 kills, two errors and 23 attempts for a .565 hitting performance versus CSUN. He averaged 6.40 points, 4.80 kills and 2.40 blocks per game over the course of five games, while hitting .552 (24-3-38). Johnson more than doubled his current season average of 1.16 blocks per game, as well as significantly bettered his average of 2.88 kills per game. The Bruins boast a six-match win steak. The UCLA head coach is Al Scates.
