Fernando Pessoa, a 6-4 senior outside hitter for fourth-ranked Brigham Young University (9-3, 7-1 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men's National Player of the Week. Pessoa averaged 6.42 points, 6.00 kills, 2.33 digs and 0.50 blocks per game, while hitting .681 (36-4-47) in two sweeps of 11th-ranked Stanford. He started the weekend hitting a career-best .700 with 16 kills on 20 attempts. He added seven digs, three blocks, two assists and one ace for the night. Pessoa pounded 20 kills in the second match versus the Cardinal, marking the third time this season he has met or surpassed that milestone. He has also registered double-figure kills in nine of the Cougars' 12 matches. Pessoa was named the national player of the week for Jan. 20, 2004, as well. The Brigham Young University head coach is Tom Peterson.
