Brian Hughes, a 6-4 opposite hitter for unranked Ball State University is the AVCA/ Sports Imports Division I/II Men's National Player of the Week for his contributions in the victory over the 12th ranked team in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 15 poll, Lewis University (15-13, 9-15, 15-10, 12-15, 16-14).  The match was the first time Hughes started in the opposite position and his debut performance included 30 kills, 7 digs and 9 total blocks.  Hughes became just the ninth player in Ball State history to record 30 kills in a match.  His .387 hitting percentage was a season-best and moved him into the top 20 for Ball State's career kill leaders with 707; his dig total for the evening moved his career digs to 471 which places him in the 17th position in BSU's record books.  The victory over league rival Lewis snapped a four-match losing streak for the visiting Cardinals; Ball State had not recorded a victory at Lewis since Feb. 4, 1997.  The win marks the second victory in a row over ranked opponents.
