Costas Theocharidis, a 6-2 outside hitter for No. 5 Hawai'i is the AVCA/Sports Imports Division I/II Men's National Player of the Week for the week ending March 13, 2000. Theocharidis and the Rainbows played host to the No. 1 team in the nation, Pepperdine University March 10th and 11th. Despite being hospitalized for abdominal pain earlier in the week, Theocharidis led all attackers with a season-high 34 kills and added another season-high of 10 total blocks. Despite his performance the Rainbows were unable to overcome a two-game deficit and fell to the Waves in four-games. A crowd of 5,746 returned to the Stan Sheriff Center on Saturday evening to see the rematch and they were not disappointed in the final result. The Rainbows dropped game one 9-15, but held Pepperdine to below 11 points for each of the next three games. Theocharidis again led both teams with 20 kills. For the week he averaged 6.75 kills per game for a .369 hitting percentage and contributed 2.25 blocks per game. The freshman has surpassed the 30-kill plateau four times in 2000 and is averaging 6.20 kills per game.
