LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman outside hitter Alex Jupiter (Hermosa Beach/Redondo Union HS) registered 15 kills and 19.5 points Saturday as the No. 7 USC Women of Troy swept the No. 21 San Diego Toreros, 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-17), to win the 2008 Holiday Inn LA City Center Trojan Invitational. For her efforts, Jupiter was named tournament most valuable player after leading the Women of Troy in kills for all three matches.

USC (3-2) handed San Diego (5-1) its first loss of the season as the Trojans improved to 6-0 all-time against the Toreros.

Jupiter garnered MVP honors after totaling 48 kills in 10 sets (4.80 kps) while hitting .367 for the tournament (48-12-98). She had one assist, three service aces, 10 digs, seven blocks (five solo, two assisted) and 57 points (5.70 pps).

Junior outside hitter Jessica Gysin (Los Gatos/St. Francis HS), who was named to the all-tournament team, had 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks (two solo) for the Women of Troy. Junior All-America setter Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach/Mira Costa HS) had 34 assists in the win, with two kills, four digs and three block assists. Junior libero Alli Hillgren (Rancho Santa Fe/Francis Parker HS), also an all-tournament team selection, had 17 digs and two assists.

Torey Ellick led the Toreros with nine kills while Ashton Basch and Jaimarie Sutherland had eight kills apiece. Setter Jessica Nyrop, who was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Amy DeGroot, had 30 assists for USD with three digs and three blocks.

The Women of Troy had an 8-6 lead in the first set before San Diego registered a 5-1 run. Nyrop and Basch combined on a block as the Toreros took the 11-9 lead. Jupiter and Zoe Garrett returned the favor to tie it at 13-13. Kills from Sutherland and Torey Ellick forced USC to burn a timeout with USD leading, 17-14. USD pushed it to a 22-20 advantage, but Jupiter hammered a kill and followed with a solo block to tie it at 22-22. Sutherland had bookend kills with a Jupiter kill between as the Toreros had set point, 24-23. Carico then snuck a set between the Toreros' defense to tie it and Gysin came up with a kill to give USC set point. On Carico's serve, Garrett was able to put away the set with a shot down the middle.

Lauren Williams' solo block led the way for a 7-3 run for USC at the start of set two, but the Toreros erased the deficit as Ellick hit two kills to tie it at 9-9. After USC called a timeout, Jupiter's kill started a streak of four straight points. DeGroot's ace later cut the deficit to two at 16-14, but Williams put one down from the middle and an attack error put USC back on top by four. Jupiter hammered an overpass down as another 4-1 run from the Women of Troy was capped on a solo block by Jupiter and a 22-15 lead for USC. Breanne Ogden's ace made it a 23-17 deficit, but it was Jupiter again who used a kill and set-clinching service ace to give USC the 2-0 lead in the match.

In set three, USC got out to the 7-3 lead. Both teams committed three straight errors apiece as the score got to 10-6 for the host Trojans. Williams and Roleder's block pushed the Trojan lead to five points at 15-10, but four straight by the Toreros cut the deficit to one. After the USC timeout, the Women of Troy went on a 7-3 run to take command at 22-17. Gysin stuffed a USD attempt, followed by a Garrett kill and a Gysin roll shot as the Trojans closed out the match with six straight points. San Diego had 10 errors in set three for a negative .057 hitting percentage.
