No. 3 West Texas A&M Defeat No. 14 Central Missouri in Three
PITTSBURG, Kans. - The Lady Buffs went 2-0 today at the Pittsburg State Classic Tournament, defeating #14-ranked Central Missouri in three sets with scores of 28-26, 25-14, and 25-18. WT is now 18-3 overall and 2-0 in the Lone Star Conference, while Central Missouri has an overall record of 17-5.
"I thought that we had a nice comeback against Central Missouri after not being successful against Pitt State," said head coach Tony Graystone. "We fought really hard and Central Missouri is a quality team. For us to beat them showed a lot about this team's character."
Juniors Laura Prinsen and Melissa Harper both tallied double-digit kills with 15-31 (.419) and 13-19 (.632), respectively, and both also contributed one block assist. Junior setter Katie Rickwartz had 45 assists, leading the Lady Buffs to a team hitting percentage of .373. She also tallied three service aces. Senior libero Sara Contreras once again led WT's defense with 19 digs.
"Overall, I thought 3-1 was pretty good for it being the fifth straight week on the road," Graystone said. "Throughout the weekend, different players were very good, and everyone got a lot of playing time. I am pleased with the last five weeks, but we are ready to be back on our home court."
After five consecutive weeks on the road, the Lady Buffs return to The Box this week for more LSC action. WT will face Texas Woman's on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. followed by Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 2:00 p.m.
