St. John's Sweeps Central Connecticut State

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - The St. John's volleyball team defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-0, on Wednesday at CCSU's Detrick Gymnasium. The scores of the match were 25-13, 25-17 and 27-25. With the win, the Red Storm evens out its record at 2-2, while the Blue Devils also sit at 2-2 on the season after the loss.

Wioleta Leszczynska recorded her second straight double-double to lead St. John's with 32 assists and 12 digs to go along with six kills and a service ace. Two Red Storm players recorded double-digit kills as senior Valeria Kovaleva tied the match-high with 12 and classmate Chen Chen checked in with 10. Seniors Casie Brooks and Lena Yee led the St. John's defense as Brooks recorded a match-high 15 kills and Yee registered 12 digs.

The first set began with the Red Storm establishing a lead early by scoring the first three points and building a 7-3 lead. The Blue Devils called its first timeout at 13-6 and after the breather the Red Storm scored seven of the next 10 points. On the last volley of the set, after an attack from CCSU bounced high off a block, the ball ricocheted off of a divider hanging from the ceiling of the gym, Yee followed it the whole time to record the dig and a kill by Brooks ended the set, 25-13.

St. John's opened the second set similar to the first as the team jumped out to a 9-3 lead and forced the Blue Devils to burn a timeout. CCSU quickly came back to within three points at 12-9 and the Red Storm halted the momentum by calling a timeout of its own. The St. John's offense registered 17 kills in the set to CCSU's 9 and with a .341 hitting percentage the Red Storm would go on to win, 25-17.

On the first play of her collegiate career, freshman Jordan Haskins recorded a kill to start set three. The score remained close through 7-7 until St. John's grabbed three points for a 10-7 lead. The Red Storm would hold the lead until a CCSU block tied the score at 19-19 and forced STJ to call a timeout. The Blue Devils took a late lead twice and had set-point at 24-23, but St. John's answered with two kills by Chen and Leszczysnka to take a 25-24 lead. A kill by Leszczynska ended the set, 27-25, and the Red Storm won the match 3-0.

For CCSU, sophomore Lauren Snyder led the team with 12 kills, while classmate Amanda Bayer registered a team-high 22 assists. Sophomore libero Kaitlin Petrella recorded nine digs to lead the Blue Devils defense.

The St. John's volleyball team returns to action on Friday, Sept. 5, at the Spring Hill Suites at Arundel Mills Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland. The Red Storm will square off against the Wildcats of Kentucky at 5 p.m. at Maryland's Comcast Center Pavilion. STJ is set to take on Maryland and Missouri on the second day of the tournament on Saturday.
