New Mexico State Downs UTEP 3-0
LAS CRUCES, N.M.- The New Mexico State volleyball team downed I-10 rival UTEP 3-0 (25-10, 25-17, 25-22), Wednesday, Sept. 3 in front of 2,011 screaming fans at the Pan American Center, in Las Cruces, N.M.
Leading the way for the Crimson and White was senior outside hitter Lindsey Yon with a game-high 12 kills, nine digs and one block assist.
Head coach Mike Jordan said he was very pleased with the win against the rival school.
"You always want to win the rivalry games," Jordan said. "The win is great for the university and our program, so I am glad that we did that."
Senior middle hitter Amber Simpson added six kills and had as many block assists. Freshman setter Jennah DeVries supplied the team with 17 assists, while senior setter Alyssa Gintant had 11.
Defensively, senior libero Krystal Torres recorded a match-high 11 digs and sophomore Whitney Phillips added eight block assists.
For the Miners, Amy Danders led the way with seven kills, while setter Patty Jarmoc had a match-high 21 assists. Catherine Chaves recorded a team-high 10 digs.
The Aggies came out and dominated in sets one and two as they recorded 25 kills to the Miners' eight.
"I thought we played especially well in games one and two," Jordan said, "We came out and played efficiently and were well prepared."
In set one, NMSU took command early with a 10-5 lead and extended it 17-6 after a solid 7-1 run. Yon led the Aggies' offense and defense with four kills and five digs.
The second set was highlighted with a six-point Yon service effort which allowed the Aggies to swing ahead of the Miners 13-6. The Aggies steadily sought their way to 25 after recording 12 kills to UTEP's five.
In set three the Miners would not go down without a fight as they recorded their first lead of the night when they jumped on the Aggies early 3-4. Both team kept the score close, but after the game tied up at 13-13 NMSU never looked back and eventually earned the victory, 25-22.
NMSU is back in action Thursday, Sept. 4 when they go head-to-head with Florida Gulf Coast in their opening match of the Hotel Encanto Volleyball Classic. The match is set for 4:00 p.m.
