No. 8 Washburn Sweeps SW Baptist To Win Sixth Straight
TOPEKA, Kan. - Kelci Wigger had seven kills in the final set as the eighth-ranked Lady Blues swept Southwest Baptist, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21, Friday night in Lee Arena. The win was the sixth straight for Washburn (20-2, 5-2 MIAA).
The Lady Blues will continue action Saturday at 6 p.m. against 13th-ranked Pittsburg State at home.
Wigger finished with eight kills, leading the team in that category for the first time this year, and she hit .636 with one error in 11 tries. Monica Miesner had seven kills and Mollie Lacy and Stephanie Nitz had six each.
Molly Smith led the defense with 18 digs and Miesner had 15. Kate Hampson led with 28 assists, moving within six of tying the school career record, and she tied Nitz with a team-high three blocks.
The Lady Blues hit .267 as a team and the Bearcats hit .121 on the night, turning in a -.049 effort in set two. Washburn hit .350 in the deciding set.
Hampson now has 3,909 assists in her third year. Six more will tie Lindsey Kersting, who had 3,915 from 1999-02, and seven more will give her the school record.
The Lady Blues beat SBU for the 18th straight time.
