No. 2 Emory Wins Five-Set Thriller over No. 3 La Verne at Leopard Invitational

LA VERNE, Calif. - Second-ranked Emory overcame a 2-1 set deficit to defeat third-ranked La Verne in a five-set thriller in the final match of the Leopard Invitational at Frantz Athletic Court.
Scores were 22-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Emory improved to 21-5 on the season while La Verne dropped to 14-2.
The final stanza saw the Leopards go up 5-3 followed by a 4-0 run by the Eagles to give the visitors a 7-5 advantage. La Verne was able to draw even at 11-11 and 13-13, but consecutive kills by Emory sealed the win to go 2-1 on the weekend.
La Verne rallied late in the fourth set, coming back from a 20-14 deficit to earn a 23-23 tie only to watch the Eagles close it out with two straight points.
The Leopards hit .226 compared to .199 for Emory while recording 7 blocks to 6 for the Eagles.
Alysse Meyer (18) and Dani Huffman (15) combined for 33 kills for the Eagles while Natalie Schonefeld dished out 48 assists. Brianna Gonzales recorded a match-high 25 kills for the Green and Orange with teammate Anna Calmer posting 15 kills. Yesenia Lopez equalled Schonefeld for match-high honors in assists with 48.
