CHICO, Calif. - The weight of Cal State San Bernardino's polished offense and its blocking ability at the net was too much for host Chico State Saturday night as the Coyotes swept past the Wildcats, 3-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

The victory improved the Coyotes -- ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 2 in the Pacific Region, to 20-2 on the season and 12-2 in the CCAA. Chico State slipped to 15-9 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

Meanwhile, a logjam continues in second place as UC San Diego, Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona each swept their opponents to remain in second place at 11-3, one game back. Sonoma State lost to Cal State L.A. Saturday night and dropped to 10-4, two games back of CSUSB.

Senior right-side hitter Jessica Granados, coming off a 19-kill performance on Friday in a win over Cal State Stanislaus, led the Coyotes with 14 kills on .414 hitting with two service aces, four digs and two blocks, one of them solo.

Sophomore outside hitter Jane Chafeh produced 11 kills on .381 hitting with four digs and two solo blocks. Senior middle blocker Sara Rice was effective at the net with eight kills on .538 hitting while freshman middle hitter Samantha Middleborn had six kills on .417 hitting with three blocks, one of them solo.

All-America setter Sara Hoffman had a match-high 35 assists and 11 digs for a double-double.

Gillian Heydorff had a team-high nine kills for Chico State. Setter Erica Brick had 22 assists and a team-high seven digs.

The Coyotes hit .330 for the match to just .114 for the Wildcats.

CSUSB took a 20-13 lead in the first set and finished off the set , 25-20, on a kill by Rice.

In the second set, the Coyotes roared out to a 16-5 advantage on a kill by Rice and extended the margin to 21-7 on a kill by Middleborn, closing out the set, 25-12, on a kill by Granados.

Chico State sought to extend the match in set three, staying close to the Coyotes in the early going but knotting the score at 19-all on a San Bernardino error. Kills by Ashtin Hall and Granados, a Chico error and an ace by Hoffman enabled CSUSB to take a 23-19 lead.

After CSUSB led 24-20 on a kill by Granados, a kill by Chico's Lindsey Macias and a CSUSB error closed the gap to 24-22 but after a San Bernardino timeout, the Coyotes closed out the match at 25-22 on a kill by Granados.

CSUSB will return home to prepare for a CCAA match at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Cal Poly Pomona's Darlene May gym against the Broncos.  The Coyotes then host UC San Diego on Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. Both matches will be pivotal if CSUSB is to stay ahead in its bid for a third straight CCAA crown.
