Vance Powers No. 2 Northridge Past No. 8 UCLA in Three Games

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior Eric Vance pounded a match-high 18 kills to go with 10 digs as No. 2 Cal State Northridge topped No. 8 UCLA in the MPSF opener for both teams Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion.

The Matadors (4-0, 1-0 MPSF) have now won four straight matches over the Bruins (1-3, 0-1 MPSF) and have opened a season with four consecutive wins for the first time since the 1985 season.

All-American Vance hit an impressive .412 in the match with 18 kills and just four hitting errors in 34 swings. He completed his first double-double of the 2009 season and eighth of his career by adding a match-high 10 digs. Sophomore Tanner Nua added eight kills (.267) and junior Kevin McKniff chipped in seven kills (1.000) and a match-high five blocks. Matador setter Matt Stork posted 35 assists and three digs and libero Ali'i Keohohou posted seven digs. Northridge continued its torrid hitting as the Matadors hit .357 (42-12-84) in the win.

For UCLA, Jack Polales knocked down a team-high 13 kills (.346) while Garrett Muagututia added eight (.263). The Bruins hit .148 as a team committing 21 hitting errors in the loss.

Northridge did not commit more than four hitting errors in any of the three games and hit a match-high .433 in the third set.

Cal State Northridge wraps up its five-match, season-opening road trip on Friday as the Matadors travel to No. 5 UC Irvine. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bren Center.
