No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul Takes Two in California

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Whitney Meierotto posted a match high 19 kills to go with 12 digs Friday to lead Concordia University to a 3-1 victory over #22 UC San Diego early on Friday. he #1-ranked Golden Bears followed that up with a 3-0 sweep of #15 Lewis University to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Concordia came away with the win over UCSD by scores of 25-22, 26-28, 29-27 and 25-12. Their defense pulled out the victory, snagging 83 digs and keeping UCSD to just .121 in hitting. The Golden Bears also came up with ten team blocks, led by Emily Palkert with five and Sadie Kessler and Raina Hein, who tallied four each.

Meierotto led the CU offense for the second straight match, this time with 19 kills. She completed the double-double with 12 digs. Mary Slinger added a team high 21 digs, followed by Kessler with 20. Maria Steinhagen and Hein were second on the team with nine kills each.

In the evening match against Lewis University, Palkert and Steinhagen topped the offense with double figures in kills (13 and 10, respectively). The Golden Bears had control throughout the match, taking a win by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-21. They once again held their opponent to a shady offensive performance, with Lewis hitting only .162. Concordia hit .279.

Slinger and Kessler again led the defensive effort, combining for 26 of the team's 48 digs. Maggie McNamara had 37 set assists in the second match and 85 on the day.

The Golden Bears wrap up competition at the Coyote Volleyball Classic tomorrow at noon, facing unranked Shippensburg.
