Meeting Called to Order: 11:30 a.m. ET
I. Welcome. (Karen)
Karen began the call by welcoming everyone and thanked the ACC for taking the time out of their busy schedules to participate in the call. She then gave her report.
A. Division I Update
Karen reviewed the October Division I HCC minutes with the committee. The following items were briefly discussed:
*Recruiting Task Force Update: The recruiting task force held calls on Sept. 17 and Sept. 29. They recommend a slight adjustment to the recruiting calendar, which would have a quiet period all of January and another from June through the Final Four.
*The task force also proposed...Volunteer and DOVO's are not allowed to coach club. If any any head or assistant coach is coaching at a club tournament, or practices during quiet periods, it counts as one of their two coaches allowed off campus and it counts towards their 80 days.
* The committee also had a great deal of discussion of the topic of eliminating the one time transfer rule option. More to come on this topic in the future.
*13th Scholarship Proposal Update: Kathy gave the HCC an update on the status of the 13th scholarship issue. There is currently a proposal being considered by the Legislative Council to table all legislation having to do with financial aid until a study can be done in all sports. The council meets to vote on this issue Oct. 20-21. A vote by the council to table the issue and do the study would essentially stop the 13th scholarship from moving forward. Kathy reminded the committee that regardless of the movement on this issue, that it is vitally important for administrators to understand the size, scope and continued growth of volleyball in the United States.
B. New Business
Karen reintroduced the idea of having an ACC survey to the committee. Karen and Leah will set aside some time to speak more specifically about the idea in the very near future.
C. AVCA Update (Leah)
Leah gave a brief update on things going on at the AVCA. This included:
*AVCA Convention: The 2008 AVCA Convention will return to Omaha, Neb. this year and run from December 17 - 21. Convention registration opened on August 25. The deadline for Early Bird registration will be November 7, 2008. Some of the new events this year include a silent auction, Texas Hold-em tournament and guest speaker Miles Brand at the Josten's Coaches Honors Luncheon (and a special one hour Q&A session). Convention details will are available on the AVCA Web site. As of now, the Doubletree is the only convention hotel with rooms left for all nights of the convention. The Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn and Courtyard Marriott have certain nights that are sold out. In addition, Thursday-only match tickets have sold out.
*AVCA Future Stars Sunday: The big addition to this year's convention is AVCA Future Stars Sunday. Everyone will want to make plans to leave Omaha late on Sunday. There will be an expanded AVCA Talent Showcase featuring uncommitted junior, senior and junior college players. This year there will be two waves of participants. Also, the inaugural Under Armour High School All-America Match will be Sunday afternoon and can't be missed.
*Minority Coach Opportunity: If you know of a minority woman that is interested in coaching at the NCAA level, please encourage her to fill out an application to be a part of this year's minority coaches' clinic. Deserving coaches will be awarded a scholarship which covers transportation, fees, convention registration and more. Only first time attendees of this clinic are eligible for the scholarship, but all minority women are invited to attend. The deadline for applying to the minority coaches clinic is October 19, 2008.
*Convention Demonstrators: The AVCA is still searching for demonstrators for this year's convention. Demonstrators will receive 1/2 off of full convention registration and also have free access to the Pre Convention Seminar. If you are interested, please contact Will Engle (email@example.com) ASAP.
*New AVCA AED: The AVCA has announced the hiring of Ross Brown as its Assistant Executive Director. Ross replaces Todd Hamilton, who recently accepted the Executive Director position for the Receptive Services Association of America. Ross brings a great amount of knowledge and experience to the position. More on his hiring will be coming soon.
*October 14th: Was the deadline for membership to be eligible for postseason awards. Please remind your head coaches if they are not members, to join by this date or if they are members, to renew. Also, the 2008 awards packets are posted online on the AVCA website.
*AVCA membership crossed the 5,000 mark at the end of September, but the association expects a small drop due to some memberships that were expired but not terminated during the website and membership database transition. Reaching 5,000 members is a significant milestone for the association and that goal is close to being achieved.
* The new AVCA website has officially been launched (http://www.avca.org/). The new site has a different look and feel as well as some new functionalities. The AVCA encourages you to take a few moments, if you haven't already, to review the site and feel free to provide any feedback to AVCA headquarters.
