DIII No. 4 Stevens Concludes Day 1 of Nazareth Tournament with a Pair of Wins
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore outside hitter SteFan PremDas helped to lift the fourth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a pair of wins Friday evening in Rochester, N.Y. during the opening round of the Nazareth College Tournament. PremDas totaled 24 kills, four aces and over five blocks as the Ducks defeated No. 11 Carthage College then No. 13 Eastern Mennonite University. Senior middle hitter Doug Reger also had a strong performance at the net for Stevens as he notched a .583 hitting percentage in the win over the Red Men. The Ducks improve to 11-2 on the year and are scheduled to take on SUNY New Paltz and No. 14 Medaille College tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Stevens def. Carthage 3-0 (30-19, 30-28, 30-19)
PremDas led the fourth-ranked Ducks past No. 11 Carthage as he registered 12 kills and a pair of service aces. Reger cranked out a .583 hitting percentage on nine kills and added two blocks, while senior outside hitter Joe Trinsey tallied nine kills and three blocks. Senior middle hitter Andrew Cranford notched eight kills and four blocks in the win.
Sophomore setter Brandt Grobeis dished out 37 assists and launched a pair of aces, while senior libero Michael Bertucci led defensively with six digs. Trinsey lifted five digs and Grobeis finished with two kills and a pair of blocks.
As a team the Ducks hit .395 in the match and totaled 8.5 blocks. Carthage produced a .118 team hitting percentage and amassed three blocks. The Red Men were led by freshman outside hitter Randy Hansen (Oak Lawn, Ill.), who registered 12 kills, eight digs and an ace. Senior right-side hitter Juri Veldre (West Allis, Wis.) landed nine kills and two blocks, while freshman setter John Condon (Des Plaines, Ill) connected on 26 assists. Carthage falls to 4-11 on the year as the Ducks improve to 10-2.

PremDas once again led the way for Stevens having accumulated 12 kills, five blocks and a pair of aces. His hitting percentage of .450 was the highest in the match. Trinsey followed suit with his 11 kills and 11 digs, while Cranford drilled nine kills and tallied five blocks. Senior outside hitter John Dennan got in on the action and posted six kills, six digs and ace and a block in the win.
Grobeis once again led the way in assists as he totaled 38 against EMU. Stevens produced a team hitting percentage of .259 and amassed 11 team blocks.
For the Royals, junior middle blocker Justin Reesor (Stouffville, Ontario) led with 10 kills and three blocks. Freshman opposite hitter Cody Kennedy (Newport News, Va.) recorded eight kills, while sophomore setter Shane Holderby (Virginia Beach, Va.) connected on 36 assists. The dig leader for EMU was senior outside hitter Cory Parsons (Colmar, Pa.) as he lofted 12 in the match. The Royals produced a team hitting percentage of .101 and totaled seven blocks as they fall to 7-5 on the year.
