A. AVCA Update (Leah)

Leah gave a brief update on things going on at the AVCA. This included:

*AVCA Convention:  The 2008 AVCA Convention will return to Omaha, Neb. this year and run from December 17 - 21. Convention registration opened on August 25. Please watch the AVCA At the Net and special convention updates coming soon via email. Some of the new events this year include a silent auction, Texas Hold-em tournament and guest speaker Miles Brand at the Josten's Coaches Honors Luncheon (and a special one hour Q&A session). Convention details will are available on the AVCA Web site.

*AVCA Future Stars Sunday: The big addition to this year's convention is AVCA Future Stars Sunday. Everyone will want to make plans to leave Omaha late on Sunday. There will be an expanded AVCA Talent Showcase featuring uncommitted junior, senior and junior college players. This year there will be two waves of participants. Also, the inaugural Under Armour High School All-America Match will be Sunday afternoon and can't be missed.

*Minority Coach Opportunity: If you know of a minority woman that is interested in coaching at the NCAA level, please encourage her to fill out an application to be a part of this year's minority coaches' clinic. Deserving coaches will be awarded a scholarship which covers transportation, fees, convention registration and more. Only first time attendees of this clinic are eligible for the scholarship, but all minority women are invited to attend. Watch At the Net and special emails about this opportunity.

*Convention Demonstrators: The AVCA is still searching for demonstrators for this year's convention. Demonstrators will receive 1/2 off of full convention registration and also have free access to the Pre Convention Seminar. If you are interested, please contact Will Engle (will.engle@avca.org) ASAP.

*AVCA Elections: Election season is upon us. The AVCA President-Elect position is open to any member in good standing. If you are interested in running or would like more information, please contact Todd Hamilton (todd.hamilton@avca.org) ASAP.

*30 Under 30: This year the AVCA has created an awards program for those "up-and-coming" coaches who will be 30 years old or under in 2009. Watch for the February/March edition of Coaching Volleyball magazine, which will formally announce this year's 30 Under 30 winners.

*AVCA Webinar: The AVCA recently conducted another of its webinars. The title of this webinar was Coaching Strategy in a 25 Point Set: Five Points, Five Factors and was facilitated by Kent Miller (coach at the University of Toledo and former national team coach). The webinar is available online in both audio and power point formats in the Coaching Education section of the AVCA website.

*AVCA Blog: The AVCA has started a new blog for the 2008 season, solely devoted to the sport of women's volleyball. Please email Leah (leah.brock@avca.org) with any significant accomplishments, community service efforts, special interest stories, etc.

B. New Business

Cody asked Leah to brief the committee on the proposal for a 13th scholarship. Recently, the PAC-10 submitted a written proposal to the NCAA for an additional volleyball scholarship in Division I. The Horizon League and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) have also, to date, given verbal backing to the proposal. There continues to be discussions with various committees that have oversight over the matter, and the AVCA will continue to update its membership on a regular basis as the proposal progresses. The formal name the proposal was given is 2008-40.

C. Division I Update

Cody advised the Division II committee members and all coaches to check out the Division I HCC minutes, posted on the AVCA website. Please take the time to look at what is going on in the Division I world, as it often trickles down to Divisions II and III.

Cody wrapped up the meeting by again reminding the HCC members to please provide him with any items they would like for him to address on future HCC calls.

Meeting adjourned: 1:23 p.m.

VII. Next Meeting

The next meeting will be in October 15th at 1 p.m. Central Time.
